In Loving Memory of Steve Hyde

On Monday 8th January 2007 the local music industry farewelled one its iconic personalities, Steve Hyde. Steve died suddenly on Christmas Day, the result of a massive heart attack.

Stephen Waldron Hyde was born in Newport Pagnall, England on the 24th February 1960. In 1984 he migrated to New Zealand, settling in Christchurch.

Steve almost immediately took up a position in retail sales with Charlie Jemmett at CJ's Music (later to become CJ's MusicWorks) where he worked until his untimely death. Over this time his role expanded from retail sales to hi-tech consultant, becoming a nationwide representative for the MusicWorks group. His knowledge and expertise had this Hi-Tech music guru and trouble shooter contribute a regular music technology column for the Christchurch Star in the Computer section of the newspaper and was a regular CD and concert reviewer for both the Christchurch Star and CTV. He was also strongly involved with music divisions at the Tai Poutini Polytechnic in Greymouth.

Steve was an outstanding performer and entertainer. Being a bass player with flair that exploded onto a stage commanding attention, Steve was instantly accepted into the local music scene with great enthusiasm. He was a key member in bands Junction 14, Tango Palace, XJ14, Dateless 'n' Desperate, and D'n'D Showband.

Over most recent months he was strongly involved in the MusicWorks Weekend Warrior programme, directing and preping hobby musicians for live performance.
Steve was highly regarded as a close acquaintance and friend to musicians and an encouraging mentor to up and coming talent.
